Arusha, 19 July 2024: During the forty-fifth (45th) Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) that took place in Accra – Ghana, from 18-19 July 2024, two Judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Court), were re-elected, and one Judge elected.
Hon Justice Stella Isibhakhomen Anukam from Nigeria and Hon Justice Blaise Tchikaya from the Republic of Congo, were re-elected for a final term of six (6) years each. They were both elected Judges of the Court in July 2018 for a term of six (6) years.
Hon Justice Duncan Gaswaga from the Republic of Uganda was elected for a six-year term.
He replaces Hon Justice Ben Kioko from the Republic of Kenya, who has retired after serving two terms of six years each.
Hon. Justice Gaswaga will be sworn-in at the commencement of the 74th Ordinary Session of the Court at its seat in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania on 2 September 2024.
The President of the Court, Hon Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud, has extended congratulatory messages to the three Judges, and wished them every success in their pursuit of the common objective of enhancing the protection of human & people’s rights on the continent.
